Being in a relationship is one of the best parts of life; you’ll have someone to come home to every night, share you dreams and darkest fears with, and have support you at all times. And when you’ve found that one person that just seems to fit into your life a missing puzzle piece, there’s no better sense of contentment.
But let’s not gloss over the rougher patches of a relationship. It’s not secret that relationships take a lot of work. No matter how in love you are, if you do not work at it, that love can fade over time, leaving you in a bitter relationship that you’re just holding on to out of habit.
We don’t want that to happen to you and your significant other!
Sure, some couples have some major issues that no amount of relationship advice is going to solve. But for everyday couples that want to keep their relationships strong and long-lasting, there are so many little things that they can do to ensure that. It won’t cost you any money, or take too much effort. But the results are so, so worth it.
Here are 8 little ways in which you can make your relationship better:
1. Tell Them How You Feel
No, we aren’t asking you to make lengthy proclamations of love or write love letters. ‘Aint nobody got time for that!
But, you should always make it a point to tell them how you feel about them. You might have little moments where you look at them and think “Man, am I lucky to have you”, or “he/she is so kind/cute/loving, what did I do to deserve them?” The next time any of these thoughts pop into your head, you should say it out loud. It’s not going to take any extra effort from you, and we can guarantee it’s going to make your partner’s day!
2. Hug It Out
Sometimes, the simplest of gestures can make such a big difference. Kisses are great too, but a warm hug is the best medicine for anyone who’s feeling down, and it will mean that much more to your partner that you acknowledged their feelings (be it sadness, anger, fear, etc.) and are trying to make them feel better.
And it works 99.9% of the time too. Those odds sound pretty good to us!
3. Check In With Them
Chances are that one or both of you is working, and therefore spends the better part of the waking day away from each other. Take a couple minutes out of your day to call them or send them a message checking up on them. If you know they’re busy and won’t reply immediately, send them a cute message to let them know you’re thinking about them. If they’re having a particularly hard day, hearing from you will instantly make it better.
It’s not too much to ask, and it’s definitely not hard with this day and age of technology. All it takes is a couple taps on your phone!
4. Enjoy A Lazy Day Together
Many couples have the misconception that if they’re together, they need to be doing something. But that means they miss out on one of the best parts of being in a relationship: spending an entire day together doing nothing but lazying around, eating junk food, stealing kisses, and just enjoying each other’s company without any distractions.
5. Create Your Own Rituals
There are probably things that you like to do on certain days, and things that your significant other does. Now it’s time to create rituals together. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but no matter how small, it will be your thing, and that’s what makes it special.
For example, Saturday night could be date night, or on Fridays when you cook dinner together. You might go on walks together in the morning, or watch your favorite show at night.
6. Give Them All Your Attention
It’s natural that your mind is riddled with outside distractions like that unfinished project, bills that need to be paid, the storyline of your favorite show, etc. But when you’re with your partner, make sure to push everything aside and give them all your attention. Most importantly, put away your phone!
Actually listen to what they’re saying, and talk to them as well. That’s the kind of quality time spent together that no amount of money or technology can get you.
7. Take An Interest In Their Life
Sure, the life you’ve created together is important, but they are also their own person. Which means they have friends, family, and a life away from you. Take an interest in their life, career and hobbies. And make sure to ask about their friends and family, too. It will let them know you care about them as an individual, and bring you closer together.
8. Surprise Them
A relationship that gets too boring is probably not going to last long. Sure, you might get comfortable with each other and build yourselves a routine, but don’t let that stop you from keeping them on their toes. Do something spontaneously that makes them happy. You don’t need even need to do too much, a simple handwritten note sneaked in their bag, or stuck on their car is all it takes!
