Nicknamed “The King of Hollywood,” Clark Gable was already famous when he enlisted in the military. He was beyond the draft age at age forty, but he was permitted to enlist as an Army Air Force private in 1942. He served in WWII. The actor enlisted out of a feeling of patriotic duty.
He flew a total of five combat missions. He was an observer-gunner in B-17 Flying Fortresses, seeing the most action for a heated several months in the summer of 1943. He earned an Air Medal, as well as a Distinguished Flying Cross for his work as a gunner.
