Actor Ed Asner was with the US Army Signal Corps. Before that, he worked on a General Motors assembly line. Asner got his start in acting when he appeared in various plays in the Army, touring camps throughout Europe in WWII. Asner would become famous for his role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

He would go on to win seven Emmys. He also appeared on the show Lou Grant from 1977 until 1982. His movies include cute kids’ films such as Elf, Up, and The Christmas Card. Asner is also a published author, having written the book The Grouchy Historian.
