Spencer Tracy served in the US Navy from 1918 until 1921. He later said that he wanted to serve because he was “itching…to see some excitement.” Tracy didn’t see much in the Navy, as he enrolled with his friend at age eighteen and never saw action. Instead, he was stationed the entire time at Norfolk, Virginia’s military base.

His acting career would be far more exciting, and he has been nominated for nine Oscars. He was a Golden Age legend, starring in movies such as Adam’s Rib, The Old Man and the Sea, and Boys Town. He is tied with Laurence Olivier, another military vet, for most Oscar nominations.
